India Approves Sixth Semiconductor Unit in Boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat Vision

The Union Cabinet of India approves sixth semiconductor manufacturing unit under the India Semiconductor Mission. This marks a major milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in the strategic semiconductor sector.

Joint Venture by HCL and Foxconn Near Jewar Airport

The newly approved unit will be developed as a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn, two established names in hardware and electronics manufacturing. The facility will be located near Jewar airport within the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region.

This unit will produce display driver chips used in a wide range of devices, including mobile phones, laptops, personal computers, automobiles, and other display-enabled electronics. With a planned production capacity of 20,000 wafers per month and an estimated output of 36 million chips monthly, the facility will significantly bolster India’s chip-making capabilities.

The project represents an investment of ₹3,700 crore and is set to play a vital role in strengthening India’s semiconductor infrastructure.

    Expanding Ecosystem and Talent Development

This will be the sixth semiconductor unit in India, with five others already under advanced stages of construction. The nation is witnessing a rapid expansion of its semiconductor ecosystem, with world-class design centres emerging across several states.

Over 270 academic institutions and 70 startups are now actively involved in cutting-edge semiconductor design. Students from these institutions have developed 20 innovative products that have been successfully taped out at the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali.

The growth is not limited to design and fabrication alone. Key ecosystem partners such as Applied Materials and Lam Research, major equipment suppliers, have established a presence in India. Chemical and gas providers like Merck, Linde, Air Liquide, and Inox are also scaling up operations to support the semiconductor supply chain.

Meeting Rising Demand in Key Sectors

With growing domestic demand for semiconductors across sectors like mobile phones, laptops, servers, medical devices, power electronics, defence, and consumer electronics, this new unit is expected to play a critical role in India’s journey towards becoming a global semiconductor hub.

This latest approval aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, aiming to make India self-sufficient and globally competitive in technology manufacturing.
