India AI Impact Summit 2026 Positions New Delhi At Centre Of Global AI Dialogue
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed world leaders to New Delhi as India opened the India AI Impact Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam. He described the gathering as a moment of pride and said the world was coming to India to shape the future of artificial intelligence. Moreover, he stressed that the summit reflects the country’s growing technological capability and global contribution.
The event marks the first major AI summit hosted in the Global South. It brings together political leaders, technology companies, startups and researchers to discuss inclusion, responsibility and measurable impact in AI development. Consequently, India aims to position itself as a bridge between innovation and equitable global progress.
IndiaAI Mission And Domestic Capacity Building
Under the IndiaAI Mission, the government has committed Rs 10,372 crore to develop a comprehensive AI ecosystem. Authorities have onboarded more than 38,000 GPUs to provide shared compute access. In addition, developers are building 12 indigenous foundation models and have approved over 30 India specific AI applications.
Talent development remains central to the strategy. The government supports thousands of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students through targeted programmes. As a result, officials seek to strengthen both research depth and practical deployment across sectors.
The AI Impact Expo, spread across more than 70,000 square metres, showcases applications in agriculture, healthcare, education and public services. Through working groups and thematic sessions, participants aim to produce actionable proposals such as shared compute frameworks and AI commons for public good.
Global Leaders And Industry Participation
Delegations from more than 45 countries are attending the summit. Among the prominent leaders present are Emmanuel Macron, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Antonio Guterres. Their participation underlines the strategic importance attached to AI governance and international cooperation.
A strong United States delegation has also arrived, including senior executives from Microsoft, IBM, Zoom, Kyndryl and Adobe. Industry leaders have highlighted the need for trusted and sovereign technology stacks while promoting ethical governance standards. Furthermore, discussions focus on narrowing the AI adoption gap between the Global North and Global South.
Natasha Crampton of Microsoft pointed to uneven AI diffusion globally and called for collaboration across borders. Meanwhile, representatives from IBM and Zoom emphasised trust, security and human values in AI deployment.
Policy Announcements And Strategic Moves
MeitY secretary S Krishnan announced that India’s first commercial scale semiconductor production will begin soon, with Micron expected to launch operations at its India facility later this month. Under the India Semiconductor Mission, authorities have approved 10 projects and renewed efforts under Semiconductor Mission 2.0 to design AI focused chips domestically.
Krishnan also said more than 2.5 lakh participants have registered for the summit, exceeding expectations. Meanwhile, the National Payments Corporation of India has extended its UPI One World wallet service as a pilot for international delegates, allowing foreign visitors to make UPI payments without an Indian bank account.
Officials have framed the summit around the principle of welfare for all and happiness for all. By convening leaders, industry and researchers, India seeks to align technological ambition with inclusive global impact.
