Kawasaki Heavy Industries Partners With Airbus on Eurodrone Defence Project

Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries will form a technical partnership with Airbus Defence and Space to develop defence drone technology, marking the first collaboration of its kind between a Japanese heavy industry company and a major foreign defence contractor.

The agreement was reported by the Nikkei business daily on Friday and is expected to strengthen Japan’s involvement in advanced unmanned defence systems while expanding cooperation with European aerospace partners.

The partnership centres on the Eurodrone programme, a multinational initiative designed to develop next-generation military drones for European defence forces.

Kawasaki to Supply Anti-Submarine Warfare Systems

Under the planned collaboration, Kawasaki Heavy Industries is expected to provide anti-submarine warfare systems for the Eurodrone project.

The companies also plan to jointly propose the technology to Japan’s Ministry of Defence, potentially opening the way for the adoption of advanced drone capabilities within the country’s defence infrastructure.

The partnership represents a significant step for Kawasaki as it expands its presence in the defence technology sector through international cooperation.

    First Collaboration of Its Kind

According to the Nikkei report, this is the first time a Japanese heavy industry company has entered into a partnership with a major overseas defence manufacturer for military drone development.

The agreement reflects growing collaboration between Japan and European defence companies as countries seek to strengthen security capabilities through advanced aerospace and unmanned technologies.

Moreover, international partnerships have become increasingly important as governments invest in next-generation defence systems and enhance interoperability with allied nations.

Eurodrone Programme Brings Together Four European Nations

The Eurodrone programme is a joint development initiative involving Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

The multinational project aims to develop a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft system for defence applications, bringing together the participating countries’ aerospace expertise.

Kawasaki’s expected contribution to the programme would extend the project’s international cooperation while supporting efforts to integrate specialised anti-submarine warfare capabilities into future drone platforms.
