Space Debris Re-Entering Earth Increasing as Rocket Launches Rise: Report
The amount of space debris returning to Earth is increasing as rocket launches and satellite deployments continue to grow worldwide. According to a report by The New York Times, around one metric ton of space debris now re-enters Earth’s atmosphere every week, highlighting the expanding challenges associated with space activity.
While most objects burn up during re-entry or fall into the world’s oceans, experts say the growing number of satellites and rockets has increased the frequency of debris returning to Earth.
More Space Activity Means More Debris
According to Mariusz Slonina, who leads space situational awareness operations at the Polish Space Agency, re-entries occur every day as objects complete their orbital lifecycles.
The report noted that the US Space Force issued alerts for nearly 820 objects re-entering Earth’s atmosphere in 2025, compared with approximately 110 alerts a decade earlier. The increase reflects the rapid expansion of commercial and government space missions over recent years.
One recent incident occurred near Mukuku village in Kenya, where a large metal ring from a rocket landed on farmland. The object, which had remained in orbit for more than 16 years, was expected to burn up during atmospheric re-entry but instead reached the ground largely intact.
Recent Incidents Highlight Growing Concern
Several other cases have drawn attention to the issue of falling space debris.
These include debris from the International Space Station that landed on a home in Florida, parts of a SpaceX rocket discovered in Poland, and fragments of a defunct Chinese satellite that broke apart over Spain’s Canary Islands. Space debris has also been recovered in Australia and the Philippines.
Although such incidents remain relatively uncommon, experts say they illustrate the increasing volume of artificial objects returning from orbit.
Risk Remains Low but Is Increasing
Experts emphasise that the likelihood of an individual being struck by falling space debris remains extremely small and is still considered lower than the risk of being hit by lightning.
However, the report cited a study prepared for the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which estimated that by 2035, debris from SpaceX satellites alone could result in an injury or fatality approximately once every two years if launch activity continues to increase.
Scientists have therefore called for greater use of spacecraft materials that completely disintegrate during atmospheric re-entry. At present, however, no international regulations require manufacturers to adopt such designs.
International Rules Yet to Keep Pace
The report noted that the existing United Nations treaties governing liability for space debris were developed during the Cold War and have limited scope in addressing today’s rapidly expanding space industry.
Although the United Nations issued space debris mitigation guidelines in 2007, these recommendations are non-binding and do not impose legal obligations on governments or private companies.
The report also highlighted the difficulty of predicting where uncontrolled debris will land. According to The New York Times, even a one-minute error in estimating atmospheric re-entry can shift the projected landing zone by nearly 300 miles.
If falling space debris causes damage within the same country where the responsible company or agency is based, compensation is generally handled under domestic laws. When debris originates from another country, governments typically rely on United Nations treaties to pursue compensation.
