Zuckerberg Defends Meta in Landmark Meta VS FTC Antitrust Trial Over Instagram and WhatsApp Acquisitions
Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared in court on Monday, 14 April, to defend his company against a significant antitrust lawsuit. The trial (meta VS FTC), held in Washington, challenges Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, which US regulators argue were aimed at eliminating competition.
Meta VS FTC: Push to Restructure Meta’s Holdings
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is urging the court to force Meta to sell either or both platforms. This move aligns with former President Donald Trump’s pledge to take action against major tech firms. If successful, the lawsuit could disrupt Meta’s business, especially as Instagram generates more than half of Meta’s US ad revenue, according to analysts.
Zuckerberg answered questions on the stand, rejecting claims that Meta’s acquisitions were meant to suppress rivals. Instead, he argued that buying Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014 had long-term benefits for users and the digital ecosystem.
The Role of Competition and Platform Use
The FTC presented internal emails where Zuckerberg referred to Instagram as a potential threat to Facebook’s dominance. Another email revealed his concern that WhatsApp could grow into a major social platform. In response, Meta’s legal team stated that the competitive landscape has changed dramatically, with TikTok, YouTube, and Apple’s messaging app now serving as strong challengers.
Key to the case is how users interact with platforms. The FTC maintains that Meta holds a monopoly on social platforms used primarily to connect with friends and family. It excludes services like TikTok and YouTube, arguing these are not direct alternatives as they focus on broadcasting to wider audiences.
Meta counters that user activity spikes on its platforms during TikTok outages demonstrate real competition between services.
Financial Stakes and Industry Impact
Instagram is a crucial part of Meta’s business. Though the company does not break down revenue by app, data from Emarketer estimates Instagram will earn $37.13 billion in 2024. That figure represents more than half of Meta’s projected US ad income. Additionally, Instagram earns more per user than any other social media platform.
While WhatsApp has yet to deliver major revenue, it is Meta’s most-used app by daily users. The company is now focusing on monetising WhatsApp through business tools like chatbots, which Zuckerberg says could fuel the next phase of growth.
Wider Implications for Big Tech
The lawsuit is part of a broader crackdown on Big Tech that began under Trump’s first term. Meta, along with Amazon, Apple, and Google, faces multiple antitrust actions from US regulators.
Since the 2024 election, major tech companies have softened their stance toward Trump. Meta has eased some content policies seen as biased by Republicans and donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration. Zuckerberg has also visited the White House several times recently.
However, these efforts have not slowed the legal actions. The trial is expected to run through July. Even if the FTC wins, it would need to demonstrate that breaking up Meta’s assets would restore fair competition.
