China’s Determination to Overcome Tech Blockades
China will continue to push for technological breakthroughs, overcoming external restrictions and fostering self-reliance in innovation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday. Speaking at a press conference during the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing, Wang highlighted the country’s scientific achievements and its commitment to global technological leadership.
China has made significant progress in fields such as 5G, quantum computing, DeepSeek, and space exploration, building on its earlier advancements in atomic bombs, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and satellites. Wang credited generations of Chinese scientists for expanding the nation’s path toward becoming a science and technology powerhouse.
China Resisting External Pressures
Despite facing external suppression, particularly in space science and semiconductor production, Wang reaffirmed China’s resilience in advancing its technological capabilities.
“Where there is blockade, there is breakthrough; where there is suppression, there is innovation,” Wang stated, drawing an analogy to the mythological hero Ne Zha, who overcomes adversity to reach the sky.
He dismissed attempts to restrict China’s progress through supply chain disruptions and decoupling, warning that such measures would only result in self-isolation for those implementing them.
“As an old Chinese saying goes, ‘no mountains can stop the surging flow of a mighty river.’ Likewise, efforts to restrict innovation will fail, and technology should serve as a shared global resource rather than an instrument of division,” Wang said.
Strengthening Global Scientific Cooperation
China remains committed to international science and technology cooperation, Wang emphasised. He outlined several initiatives aimed at fostering collaboration with other nations:
- Global AI Governance Initiative: Proposed by President Xi Jinping, this initiative promotes the responsible and ethical development of AI.
- AI Capacity-Building Action Plan: A program designed to ensure AI benefits are shared for good and for all.
- Open Science Collaboration: China has partnered with Brazil, South Africa, and the African Union to support scientific capacity building in the Global South, ensuring no country is left behind.
China also pledged to share its technological advancements with the world, inviting nations to work together in space exploration, AI research, and scientific development.
China’s Vision for the Future
Despite external challenges, China is focused on driving innovation, expanding global partnerships, and reinforcing self-sufficiency in technology. As it deepens its research capabilities, the country aims to play a leading role in shaping the future of science and technology worldwide.
