Amazon Invests in Nuclear Energy to Advance Carbon-Free Future

Amazon Strengthens Sustainability Efforts with Nuclear Energy Investments

Amazon is expanding its commitment to sustainable energy by signing three new agreements to advance nuclear energy projects. These agreements focus on developing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), a key part of Amazon’s plan to achieve carbon-free energy. SMRs are smaller and faster to build compared to traditional reactors, offering scalable clean energy that fits with Amazon’s sustainability goals. Recently, the company announced that it had already matched 100% of its electricity use with renewable energy, hitting this target seven years ahead of its 2030 deadline.

Collaboration on SMR Projects at Amazon

Amazon partnered with Energy Northwest to support the development of four advanced SMRs in Washington state. The first phase will generate 320 megawatts (MW) of power, with the possibility to expand to 960 MW—enough to power over 770,000 US homes. Moreover, Amazon is working with Dominion Energy on an SMR project in Virginia, which aims to deliver 300 MW of power to the region.

Investment in X-energy and Local Benefits

Amazon also invested in X-energy, a leader in cutting-edge SMR technology. This investment will help fund the Energy Northwest project and other nuclear ventures. Besides producing clean energy, these projects will benefit local communities by creating jobs and improving infrastructure.

    Moving Toward Amazon’s Climate Goals

Amazon’s nuclear energy efforts are part of its broader renewable energy strategy, designed to meet its growing energy demands while working toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. These initiatives show Amazon’s dedication to reducing its environmental footprint and supporting sustainable energy solutions.
