Suspected Cyberattack Hits German Parliament During U.S.-Ukraine Talks

Suspected Cyberattack Disrupts German Parliament Email System During U.S.-Ukraine Talks

Germany’s lower house of parliament experienced a major email outage on Monday, with officials suspecting a cyberattack may have been responsible, according to a report by the Financial Times. The disruption coincided with high-level U.S.-Ukraine talks hosted by Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin.

    Four-Hour Email Disruption

Members of the Bundestag were unable to access their official email accounts for more than four hours, three senior lawmakers told the Financial Times. The outage affected both parliamentary communications and administrative coordination, though the full extent of the impact remains unclear.

German cybersecurity authorities are investigating the incident, which came amid heightened concerns about digital espionage and cyber interference linked to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Officials have not yet attributed the disruption to any specific actor, but the timing—during sensitive international discussions—has raised suspicions.

    Heightened Cybersecurity Concerns

The German government has faced repeated cyber threats in recent years, including a 2021 attack widely blamed on Russian state-backed hackers targeting several members of parliament. Monday’s suspected breach has renewed calls for stronger cyber defences within government institutions.

Experts said such incidents underline the growing vulnerability of political institutions to digital attacks during major diplomatic events. “Cyber disruptions during negotiations of this scale are not coincidental,” one European security analyst told local media.

A spokesperson for the Bundestag’s administration confirmed the outage but declined to comment on whether it was the result of a deliberate attack, citing ongoing investigations.

    Broader Context

The U.S.-Ukraine talks in Berlin focused on continued Western support for Kyiv and the coordination of security assistance as the conflict enters a critical phase. Germany, which has been one of Ukraine’s largest European backers, has repeatedly warned of cyber risks linked to Russian operations targeting European political and energy infrastructure.

The Bundestag’s email systems were restored by Monday evening, though technical teams continue to assess whether any data was compromised.
