China Unveils Hydrogen Fuel Cell Stack With World-Leading Power Density

A new hydrogen fuel cell technology developed by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences has passed a scientific and technological achievement appraisal organised by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF).

The technology, named the “High-Specific-Power Cathode-Closed Air-Cooled Stack”, targets small-to-medium power applications. It delivers high power density, strong environmental adaptability, and a long operational lifespan.

According to the appraisal committee, the project demonstrates significant innovation and advanced technical specifications. The committee also stated that the stack’s specific power ranks among the highest globally, while the overall technology has achieved a world-leading standard.

    Independent Research And Development System

The project established a complete independent research and development system covering materials, components, and systems. As a result, the team secured full proprietary intellectual property rights across the entire technology chain.

In addition, researchers developed an automated production line for the cathode-closed air-cooled stack. This production capability now supports large-scale manufacturing and delivery.

    Practical Applications Across Multiple Sectors

The hydrogen fuel cell technology has already entered practical use in several sectors. Current applications include forestry operations, agricultural work, power line inspections, and emergency rescue missions.

Moreover, industrial drones equipped with the system achieved more than twice the endurance of traditional lithium-battery-powered drones during operational testing. This improvement highlights the technology’s potential for extended-duration missions in demanding environments.

Advanced Performance For Small-To-Medium Power Needs

The appraisal committee noted that the technology combines high efficiency with strong adaptability under varying environmental conditions. Furthermore, the system’s compact and lightweight structure makes it suitable for mobile and industrial applications requiring reliable long-duration power.

The achievement also reflects China’s continued investment in hydrogen energy technologies and advanced fuel cell systems. With the establishment of automated manufacturing capabilities, the project moves closer to broader industrial deployment.
