China Unveils Green Hydrogen Coal Technology To Cut Power Sector Emissions

China has announced a significant breakthrough in clean energy technology, successfully developing a system that enables a 50 per cent green hydrogen blend in coal-fired power generation while achieving complete hydrogen combustion. The development marks an important step in the country’s efforts to reduce emissions from its power sector without compromising energy security.

The achievement was reported by state-owned energy giant CHN Energy. It comes as China continues to pursue practical solutions to meet its ambitious “dual carbon” goals, which include reaching peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

As the world’s largest consumer of electricity, China faces the challenge of balancing rising energy demand with the need to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, technologies that can reduce the environmental impact of existing coal-fired power plants are attracting increasing attention.

    Advanced Hydrogen-Coal Combustion System

The breakthrough is powered by a domestically developed low-nitrogen hydrogen-coal co-firing burner. The system incorporates comprehensive safety measures that cover every stage of operation, from hydrogen transport and handling to combustion within the furnace.

According to CHN Energy, the technology ensures that hydrogen and pulverised coal are thoroughly mixed before combustion. As a result, the experimental facility can achieve a hydrogen blending ratio of 50 per cent based on heat value while maintaining stable operating conditions.

Furthermore, the successful demonstration confirms that hydrogen can be integrated into traditional coal-fired power generation on a substantial scale. This provides a potential pathway for reducing emissions from existing power infrastructure.

    Potential Benefits For Emissions Reduction

The technology could deliver significant environmental benefits if adopted more widely across the power sector. CHN Energy stated that broad deployment may reduce both coal consumption and carbon emissions by as much as 50 per cent.

In addition, the system offers effective control of nitrogen oxide emissions. These pollutants are a major contributor to air quality concerns associated with fossil fuel-based electricity generation.

Consequently, the technology presents a dual advantage by lowering greenhouse gas emissions while also helping to reduce harmful atmospheric pollutants.

    Supporting China’s Energy Transition

China operates the world’s largest fleet of coal-fired power plants. While renewable energy capacity continues to expand rapidly, coal remains a critical source of electricity and grid stability.

For this reason, reducing the carbon footprint of coal-fired generation is considered essential during the transition towards a cleaner energy system. The newly developed hydrogen-coal co-firing technology could help bridge the gap between current energy requirements and long-term climate objectives.

Moreover, the breakthrough validates what CHN Energy describes as a highly promising technical route for achieving substantial carbon reductions in future coal-fired power units. The development is expected to play an important role in advancing the green transformation of China’s electricity sector while supporting national carbon reduction targets.
