Shenzhen Tech Tourism Attracts Global Visitors

Shenzhen’s High-Tech Tourism Draws Growing Numbers of International Visitors

Shenzhen is attracting a rising number of international travellers as the city’s thriving technology sector becomes a major tourism draw. Instead of focusing solely on traditional sightseeing, many overseas visitors are choosing technology-themed experiences that offer a closer look at China’s latest innovations.

The city in South China’s Guangdong Province has recorded steady growth in inbound tourism this summer. In July alone, more than 50,000 foreign visitors entered China through Shenzhen’s Luohu Port, reflecting increasing international interest in the city’s technology-driven attractions.

    Tech Attractions Become Popular Destinations

Technology-themed venues have emerged as some of Shenzhen’s most popular attractions for overseas visitors. At the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum, international families are exploring exhibitions showcasing scientific and technological developments.

Many visitors said they were particularly interested in robotics and artificial intelligence. A visitor from the United States described the science robots as fascinating, while a family from Uzbekistan said their interest in technology and robotics inspired their visit to the museum.

According to Zheng Yongchun, curator of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum, family visits have increased significantly. During peak hours, overseas visitors account for around 20 per cent of the museum’s visitors, highlighting the growing appeal of science-focused tourism.

Robotics and AI Experiences Attract Overseas Tourists

Another major attraction is the world’s first robot 6S store in Shenzhen’s Longgang District, where visitors can experience emerging technologies first-hand. Tourists have been trying AI-powered glasses, interacting with robot dogs and exploring a range of intelligent devices.

A visitor from Switzerland said artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important and wanted to experience the technology first-hand. Meanwhile, a visitor from Italy described seeing such advanced robots for the first time as feeling like a glimpse into the future.

Store managers said international tourists make up more than 30 per cent of customers during the summer season. Desktop robots, smart wearable devices and exoskeleton equipment have become some of the most sought-after products among overseas buyers.

Fan Binji, Overseas Market Manager at the robot store, said the business receives at least seven or eight foreign tour groups every week, with the number sometimes exceeding ten. He estimated that international customers account for between 30 and 40 per cent of purchases for products priced at 10,000 yuan or below.

Study Tours Drive Inbound Tourism Growth

Beyond museums and retail experiences, many international visitors are participating in themed study tours that include visits to technology companies and manufacturing facilities.

A returned student from Russia said Shenzhen offers strong opportunities for collaboration because many company headquarters in the city specialise in healthcare, medicine and other advanced industries.

Local travel agencies have also reported changing travel patterns. Zhang Bin, Product Manager at Shenzhen Century Holiday Travel Agency, said business delegations previously dominated inbound tourism. However, the agency has recently seen strong growth in family holidays, educational tours and industrial visits.

In response to changing demand, travel agencies are increasingly offering customised small-group programmes tailored to visitors interested in technology and innovation. According to Zhang, the company’s inbound tourism business has increased by around 30 per cent compared with the previous year.
