North Korea Rejects Cyber Threat Allegations From US Allies

North Korea has accused the United States and its allies of making unfounded allegations about its cyber activities in an effort to damage its image and justify pressure on sovereign states, according to state media KCNA, which cited a spokesperson for the country’s foreign ministry.

The spokesperson described a recent US-led joint warning about alleged North Korean cyber threats as a politically motivated accusation. Furthermore, the statement criticised the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT), a sanctions monitoring mechanism established by the United States and its partner countries.

    Response to Joint Cyber Warning

The statement appeared to respond to a joint alert issued on July 31 by the United States, South Korea, Japan and eight other countries. The alert warned that North Korean information technology workers allegedly use false identities to secure remote jobs and generate revenue for Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes.

According to the joint warning, these workers increasingly rely on sophisticated tools, including artificial intelligence, to conceal their activities. As a result, the participating countries said the workers could present insider threats to companies while engaging in data theft, cryptocurrency theft and the theft of sensitive information.

    Pyongyang Denounces Allegations

North Korea rejected the accusations and maintained that the claims were politically driven. The foreign ministry spokesperson argued that the allegations were intended to discredit the country rather than address genuine cybersecurity concerns.

In addition, the spokesperson criticised the MSMT, portraying it as part of a broader effort by Washington and its allies to exert pressure on sovereign nations through sanctions and political measures.

    Claims of Cyber Militarisation

The spokesperson also accused the United States of militarising cyberspace by expanding its cyber warfare capabilities and conducting joint cyber exercises with allied countries.

Moreover, North Korea said it would not accept what it described as politically motivated attempts to use cyber issues as a tool to pressure other nations. The statement insisted that Pyongyang opposed such actions and rejected the allegations contained in the multinational warning.

The joint alert from the United States, South Korea, Japan and eight other countries maintained that North Korean IT workers pose cybersecurity risks by using deceptive identities to obtain remote employment. It also alleged that the revenue generated through those activities supports the country’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes. Meanwhile, North Korea dismissed those claims, insisting they were unfounded and politically motivated.
