Egypt Officials and US Ambassador Inaugurate Renovations in Historic Cairo

Officials in Egypt, alongside the US ambassador, recently inaugurated the restoration of several monuments and buildings in Historic Cairo. Among these is the Bimaristan al-Muayyad Sheikh, a significant hospital complex constructed in 1420 AD.

Significance of the Bimaristan al-Muayyad Sheikh

The Bimaristan al-Muayyad Sheikh is renowned for its impressive architectural features. Its giant crenulated facade and intricate inlaid Kufic Arabic inscriptions make it a notable landmark in Cairo’s rich historical landscape. The restoration of this site in Egypt highlights its cultural and historical importance.

    Government’s New Approach to Preservation

According to Mohamed Ismael, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the government is now adopting a new approach to preserving the country’s ancient heritage. “It is a new policy the government is following, which is to merge civil society to help preserve the antiquities,” Ismael stated. This policy encourages the involvement of local communities in the preservation of historical sites. The restored Bimaristan al-Muayyad Sheikh will now serve as a venue for cultural activities, with the active participation of the neighbourhood’s residents.

    Additional Restorations in Egypt

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has also played a key role in the restoration efforts in Historic Cairo. Alongside the Bimaristan al-Muayyad Sheikh, other monuments have been revitalised. These include the 18th-century Sabil Kuttab of Ruqayya Dudu and the 14th-century Gate of Manjak al-Silahdar. These sites were inaugurated on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to preserve Egypt’s cultural heritage.
