Japan’s NTT Collaborates With Luxembourg’s SES For Space-based Private 5G and Edge Computing

Japanese telecommunications giant NTT has partnered with satellite operator SES to provide edge-based networking services to enterprise customers. The partnership will converge NTT’s networking and enterprise-managed services competence with SES’s satellite capabilities. It will combine NTT’s fully managed private-5G and Edge-as-a-Service solution with SES’s O3b mPOWER medium earth orbit communications system. The combined solution aims to offer expanded and reliable connectivity to companies operating in regions where terrestrial networks are lacking. It is aimed at helping energy, mining, maritime and manufacturing industries that have been limited by connectivity to carry out their digital transformation plans and increase revenue streams.

The partnership aims to put control and ownership back into the hands of the customer, delivering coverage in more than 190 countries with public-private roaming services. NTT will provide use-case consulting and design, system integrations, application development, implementation, and managed services. SES will offer end-to-end satellite networks via O3b mPOWER.

NTT’s Edge-as-a-Service includes IoT, edge compute, and private 5G connectivity across its global footprint. The service will accelerate business process automation, allowing enterprises to deploy their applications more swiftly and securely, monitor them closer to the edge, and reduce downtime while improving user experience and optimising costs.

NTT’s Olivier Posty, Country Managing Director Luxembourg, notes the importance of the partnership in the rapidly changing world, where leveraging technology is critical to driving growth and innovation. “NTT’s robust private 5G network-as-a-service full-stack solution is complemented by NTT’s 24/7 remote monitoring services and a CIO self-service portal,” he said. “This ensures that NTT’s full stack of managed edge compute services delivers real-time actionable intelligence to drive processing efficiency and accelerate business performance.”

For SES’s Chief Strategy Officer John-Paul Hemingway, the partnership is “one of its kind,” as both companies jointly provide comprehensive and resilient connectivity solutions for customers worldwide. “O3b mPOWER’s best throughput and full flexibility on asymmetric or symmetric services will result in the seamless integration and extension of terrestrial and satellite networks,” he said. This will enable customers to unlock the full potential of emerging technologies like 5G, IoT, and cloud computing and drive digital transformation across industries.
