China’s Lunar Chief Accuses US of Obstructing International Lunar Collaboration
China’s lunar chief has accused the United States of hindering its efforts to engage in joint space programmes with international partners. Wu Weiren, chief designer of China’s lunar exploration programme, made the statement on Wednesday, highlighting growing tensions over space diplomacy.
Claims of US Interference in Global Space Cooperation
Speaking to Reuters, Wu alleged that the US has repeatedly interfered in China’s attempts to work with European and other foreign space agencies. He stated that while China promotes an open approach to international cooperation, the US has taken steps to prevent such collaborations from progressing.
Wu did not specify particular incidents but underlined that China’s policy is to pursue peaceful and inclusive space exploration partnerships.
China Promotes Inclusive Space Diplomacy
According to Wu, China remains committed to space diplomacy that includes both developed and developing nations. He reaffirmed Beijing’s openness to working with any country interested in participating in lunar missions or other space science initiatives.
Wu stressed that China’s lunar programme is guided by principles of openness and mutual benefit. He added that such cooperation is essential for the future of space exploration, particularly in complex and long-term projects like moon colonisation or energy development.
Growing Ties With Russia on Moon Energy Plans
As part of its expanding space agenda, China also plans to deepen collaboration with Russia, especially in the development of nuclear energy systems on the moon. Wu said China looks forward to enhanced scientific and technological cooperation with Moscow in this area.
The remarks reflect China’s broader ambitions in lunar science and its strategic effort to position itself as a global leader in space exploration. At the same time, they also underscore rising geopolitical friction in outer space activities.
