Jio and SpaceX Sign Landmark Agreement

Mukesh Ambani-led Jio partners with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s satellite internet services in India. The agreement, revealed on Wednesday, comes just a day after rival Bharti Airtel signed a similar deal with SpaceX.

The collaboration is subject to regulatory approval, allowing both companies to explore how Starlink’s technology can complement Jio’s existing services. In return, Jio will support SpaceX’s efforts to expand internet access for businesses and consumers across India.

    Expanding Internet Access Across India

Jio Platforms Limited plans to distribute Starlink solutions through its retail stores and online platforms. The partnership will leverage Jio’s vast telecom network and Starlink’s advanced low Earth orbit satellite technology to deliver reliable broadband connectivity, even in India’s most remote regions.

Jio aims to offer Starlink equipment in its stores while also setting up a support system for installation and customer service. This initiative aligns with Jio’s commitment to making high-speed internet accessible to businesses, enterprises, and communities throughout the country.

Jio partners with SpaceX, Strengthening India’s Digital Infrastructure

Jio and SpaceX are also exploring deeper integration of their infrastructure to enhance India’s digital ecosystem.

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, stated, “Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India is a transformative step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all. By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and enhancing the reliability of high-speed internet, empowering communities and businesses across India.”

Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, praised Jio’s efforts, saying, “We applaud Jio’s commitment to advancing India’s connectivity. We look forward to working with Jio and receiving authorisation from the Government of India to provide more people, organisations, and businesses with Starlink’s high-speed internet services.”

Airtel Also Joins Hands with SpaceX

Bharti Airtel has also signed an agreement with SpaceX to offer Starlink’s satellite internet services in India. However, this partnership is also pending regulatory approvals.

Through this collaboration, Airtel and SpaceX aim to expand broadband access across India, particularly in underserved areas. Airtel may distribute Starlink equipment through its retail outlets and provide satellite-based internet services to businesses and organisations.

Additionally, the companies will explore how Starlink’s technology can complement Airtel’s existing network, with Airtel providing ground infrastructure support for SpaceX. The move aligns with Airtel’s broader strategy to enhance digital connectivity nationwide.

By incorporating Starlink into its portfolio, Airtel aims to strengthen internet access in rural schools, healthcare centres, and remote regions, contributing to India’s digital growth.
