India’s Pixxel Achieves Milestone with Hyperspectral Satellite Launch

Pixxel, a pioneering Indian space tech startup, launched three of its six hyperspectral imaging satellites aboard a SpaceX rocket from California on Tuesday. The launch, conducted at 1915 GMT (just after midnight in India), took place at the Vandenberg Space Force Base and was broadcast live by SpaceX.

Advancing Hyperspectral Imaging for Critical Industries

Pixxel’s satellites utilise hyperspectral imaging, a cutting-edge technology that captures detailed data across hundreds of light bands. This enables applications in agriculture, mining, environmental monitoring, and defence, offering unparalleled precision compared to existing imaging technologies.

Such data can improve crop yields in India’s agrarian economy, monitor geographic boundaries, track natural resources, and detect oil spills. The remaining three satellites in this constellation are expected to launch in the second quarter of the year, bolstering the capabilities of Pixxel’s imaging network.

    Pixxel: Ambitious Expansion Plans

Founded five years ago and backed by Google, Pixxel aims to expand its constellation to 24 satellites. This includes the six satellites already developed and 18 additional spacecraft in the pipeline. CEO Awais Ahmed revealed that Pixxel has already secured around 65 clients, including Rio Tinto, British Petroleum, and India’s Ministry of Agriculture. Several clients are already using data from Pixxel’s demonstration satellites.

According to Ahmed, hyperspectral imaging is projected to capture a significant share of the $19 billion satellite imagery market by 2029, contributing between $500 million and $1 billion.

India’s Growing Role in the Commercial Space Market

The SpaceX rocket carrying Pixxel’s satellites also included a satellite from another Indian space company, Diganatara, highlighting the growth of India’s private space sector. Despite its strong spacefaring history, India currently holds just 2% of the global commercial space market. However, launches like this underscore the potential for the country to expand its presence in this lucrative industry.
