Russian Man Detained Over Alleged Satellite Espionage for the U.S.

A former employee at a Russian satellite technology firm has been arrested on suspicion of treason. Authorities allege he passed sensitive information to the United States. A court in Kaliningrad confirmed on Wednesday that the man, identified only as “O”, will remain in pre-trial detention until 30 September.

Accused of Spying for U.S. Intelligence

According to a statement from the Kaliningrad court, the suspect previously worked for a company that develops electronic engines used in space satellites. Investigators believe he collected and stored classified data about the company’s technology for U.S. intelligence services.

The alleged espionage is said to have occurred between July 2021 and December 2023. The court provided no further personal details about the man or the exact nature of the information he is accused of handling.

    Facing Life Imprisonment if Convicted

The man has been charged with high treason, one of Russia’s most serious criminal offences. If found guilty, he could face a sentence of up to life imprisonment.

The arrest highlights the continued tension between Russia and Western countries, particularly involving accusations of espionage. Russian courts have increased the number of treason cases in recent years, many linked to allegations of cooperation with foreign states.
