Celebrating the 2025 Spring Festival in Outer Space

As the 2025 Spring Festival approaches on January 29, marking the Year of the Snake, the Shenzhou-19 crew aboard China’s Tiangong space station extended their heartfelt New Year wishes to people back on Earth. The crew, on a six-month mission in orbit, held a special celebration to honour this most significant holiday in the Chinese calendar, which symbolises family reunions, joy, and aspirations for the future.

In a festive video message released on Monday, astronauts Cai Xuzhe, Song Lingdong, and Wang Haoze decorated the space station with traditional Chinese papercuts featuring the Year of the Snake theme. They shared their greetings, saying, “We are in the space home of the Chinese people, wishing you all a happy Chinese New Year! We wish everyone good health and all the best in the Year of the Snake! May our great motherland enjoy harmony and prosperity!”

    Shenzhou-19 Mission and Unique Festivities

The Shenzhou-19 spacecraft was launched on October 30, 2024, carrying the three astronauts to China’s Tiangong space station for a six-month mission. This mission exemplifies China’s advancements in space exploration and its ability to celebrate cultural traditions even in outer space.

To mark the occasion, the astronauts hung festive decorations inside the station, a symbolic reminder of Chinese heritage and unity, even beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

The Significance of the Spring Festival

The Spring Festival, known globally as Chinese New Year, is a time for reflection, family bonding, and celebration. With the Year of the Snake heralding a period of renewal and resilience, the crew’s message highlights a spirit of harmony and hope for China and its people.

The Shenzhou-19 team’s thoughtful gesture from space serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of humanity and the progress of Chinese space endeavours.
