    ALLY System

First Government Institute in India to Use ALLY for Eye Surgery

On 28 August 2025, the Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR) in Delhi reached a significant medical milestone. It became the first government hospital in India and the second in South Asia to perform Robotic Custom Laser Cataract Surgery. The procedure used the advanced ALLY Adaptive Cataract Treatment System, marking a new chapter in military healthcare.

The surgery was successfully performed by Brigadier SK Mishra on a 61-year-old patient. This was the hospital’s first Femto-second Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS), a bladeless and computer-guided method. The technology represents a shift from traditional cataract surgery, offering greater accuracy and safety.

How FLACS Improves Precision and Safety

Unlike conventional methods, FLACS uses a femtosecond laser to perform delicate parts of the surgery. This includes creating corneal incisions, removing the lens cap, and breaking up the cataract. These steps are carried out with micron-level precision, reducing the risk of complications and improving recovery.

This advanced system allows surgeons to work with better control and consistency. As a result, patients benefit from more predictable outcomes and improved visual clarity. The ALLY system’s robotic features also reduce strain on the surgeon, enhancing the overall safety of the procedure.

    Strengthening Military Medical Excellence

The use of the ALLY system highlights the Armed Forces’ dedication to delivering world-class medical care. AHRR’s adoption of this technology reflects its ongoing commitment to innovation in treatment and patient safety. These efforts aim to provide the best possible care for serving personnel and their families.

This achievement has been made possible under the leadership of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, and Director General Armed Forces Medical Services Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin. With continued support, the Department of Ophthalmology at AHRR is set to lead further advances in eye care.
