Sex Toy Incidents at WNBA Games Linked to Green Dildo Coin Group
A rising trend of sex toys being thrown onto WNBA courts has been linked to a cryptocurrency group promoting a memecoin called Green Dildo Coin. Two reports published on Thursday—by USA Today and The Athletic—highlighted the group’s role in the disruptions, which have sparked backlash from players, coaches, and fans.
A spokesperson for the group confirmed to USA Today that they were behind the incidents. The Athletic also reviewed a livestream in which crypto enthusiasts celebrated a sex toy being thrown onto the Los Angeles Sparks’ court during a game on Tuesday.
Since 29 July, there have been at least six reported incidents of neon green sex toys being tossed during WNBA matches. The trend has raised safety concerns and drawn sharp criticism from those within the league.
Disruptions Dismissed by Group as “Viral Marketing”
Despite the criticism, the group behind Green Dildo Coin has defended the actions as a form of “viral stunt” meant to gain attention without relying on paid influencers. Their spokesman stated that they do not oppose women’s sports but used the platform to protest what they call a “toxic” crypto culture.
“We didn’t do this because we dislike women’s sports,” he told USA Today. “Disruptions happen in every sport. This was about gaining a voice without selling out.”
The group also placed one of its signature green sex toys on the Wall Street Bull statue in New York. The value of Green Dildo Coin reportedly surged by over 300% in the past week, according to USA Today.
League Backlash Grows Amid Safety Warnings
The latest incident occurred during the Sparks’ win over the Indiana Fever on Tuesday. After Kelsey Plum shot a free throw, a sex toy landed near Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Earlier that day, Cunningham spoke on her podcast “Show Me Something,” expressing frustration.
“Everyone’s trying to make sure the W is not a joke,” she said. “Then that happens. How are we ever going to be taken seriously?”
The trend began with an incident on 29 July, during an Atlanta Dream game. Delbert Carver was arrested and charged with multiple offences, including disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. He has since been released on bond.
Despite the legal consequences, the Green Dildo Coin group has shown no intention of stopping its disruptive tactics.
“This is empowering to every [expletive] crypto community,” one livestream speaker said, urging others to get creative with marketing. “Memecoins should make you laugh.”
