US Military Conducts Test Launch of Minuteman III Missile

The US military released a video showing the test launch of an unarmed Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), carried out as part of a standard operational test. The launch took place at 11:01 p.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday, November 5, at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, according to the military.

Key Role of the Minuteman III in US Defence

The Minuteman III missile, developed by Boeing Co., forms a critical part of the US military’s strategic defence capabilities. As a nuclear-capable ICBM, the missile has an impressive range exceeding 6,000 miles (around 9,660 kilometres) and can reach speeds of approximately 15,000 miles per hour (24,000 kilometres per hour).

Currently, around 400 Minuteman III missiles are stationed across Air Force bases in Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota. These missiles serve as a central component of the country’s nuclear deterrent, providing rapid response capability in case of threats to national security.

    Purpose of the Test Launch

The US military frequently conducts operational tests of the Minuteman III to ensure the reliability and readiness of its ICBM fleet. These tests allow the military to monitor performance, validate accuracy, and confirm that the missiles are prepared to function as intended under operational conditions. The recent test also underscores the US military’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and modernising its defence infrastructure.

The test launch comes amid heightened global focus on missile capabilities, illustrating the ongoing importance of strategic deterrence for national and global security.
