NTA Welcomes Telegram Restrictions Ahead Of NEET-UG 2026 Re-Examination

The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Monday welcomed the Centre’s decision to impose temporary restrictions on Telegram in India. The agency described the move as a necessary step to curb examination-related fraud and misinformation ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21.

According to an NTA statement, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) acted on recommendations made by the agency. As a result, the ministry directed a temporary restriction on access to Telegram in India until June 22. In addition, the government instructed the platform to disable its message-editing feature in India until June 30.

The agency said these measures are intended to protect students and maintain the integrity of the examination process. Furthermore, the restrictions seek to prevent organised cheating networks from using the platform to spread false claims related to question paper leaks.

    Temporary Restrictions Announced

The NTA stated that the temporary restriction on Telegram forms part of a broader effort to address examination-related misconduct. The agency noted that misinformation circulating through digital platforms can create confusion among students and undermine confidence in the examination process.

Therefore, the restriction will remain in place until June 22. At the same time, authorities have directed Telegram to suspend its message-editing feature in India until June 30.

    Measures Aimed At Preventing Fraud

According to the NTA, organised groups have allegedly used the platform to circulate misleading information connected to examination papers. The agency said such activities can be used to defraud students appearing for the medical entrance examination.

Moreover, the NTA maintained that the restrictions are designed to stop the spread of false claims suggesting that examination papers were leaked before the test. The agency emphasised that preventing such misinformation remains a key objective ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.

Why The Editing Feature Has Drawn Attention

The NTA specifically highlighted concerns regarding Telegram’s message-editing capability. According to the agency, the feature had allegedly been used to create misleading evidence of question paper leaks after examinations had already concluded.

The agency explained that channel administrators could edit older posts and replace attachments with question papers after an exam. Because the original timestamp remained unchanged, the altered posts could appear as though the papers had been shared before the examination.

Subsequently, these edited posts were circulated as purported proof that examination papers had leaked in advance. The NTA said this practice contributed to the spread of misinformation and created confusion around the conduct of examinations.
