Weibo Takes Action Against Toxic Discussions on Black Myth: Wukong

Weibo Enforces Guidelines on Game Discussions

China’s social media giant, Sina Weibo, has taken decisive steps to address violations of its community guidelines regarding discussions about the highly anticipated game Black Myth: Wukong. In response to a surge in irrational debates and personal attacks related to the game, Weibo has removed 1,187 pieces of content and banned 138 accounts, as announced by the platform.

    Cultural Impact and Controversial Discussions

Black Myth: Wukong, inspired by the legendary Monkey King from Journey to the West, has quickly topped the Steam charts since its release. The game’s rich incorporation of traditional Chinese culture has sparked widespread interest, not only among gamers eager to experience it but also among those intrigued by its cultural implications. Weibo highlighted that the game allows players worldwide to explore Chinese culture through its narrative and design.

However, the discussions surrounding the game have not all been positive. Some users have diverted from talking about the game’s content, instead using the platform to spread gender-based hostility, engage in personal attacks, and promote irrational views. There have even been organised efforts on external platforms to incite group opposition and provoke conflict within Weibo’s comment sections.

    Weibo’s Strict Enforcement Measures

To maintain a healthy discussion environment, Weibo has issued temporary to permanent bans on 138 accounts, depending on the severity of their infractions. Many users on the platform have expressed their support for Weibo’s actions, endorsing the need for rational discussions focused on the game’s content and the overall player experience.

One netizen commented, “If it can promote Chinese culture, then it is a good game, allowing players from all over the world to understand Chinese culture.” Another user stressed the importance of maintaining a rational attitude when discussing popular gaming topics, urging others to express their opinions respectfully.

    Call for Constructive Engagement

Weibo has called on its users to focus more on the game content and the player experience, encouraging them to contribute to the growth of China’s gaming industry with rational and objective discussions. The platform has vowed to continue its efforts to investigate and address any violations, urging netizens to avoid malicious provocations and to express their opinions in a reasonable and constructive manner.
