Democrats Warn of Conflict as Elon Musk Oversees NASA and DoD While Leading SpaceX

Lawmakers Question Elon Musk’s Dual Roles at SpaceX and Federal Oversight Body

Democratic lawmakers on key US House committees have raised alarms over a possible conflict of interest stemming from Elon Musk’s dual positions as CEO of SpaceX and a Special Government Employee overseeing major reforms at NASA and the Department of Defense (DoD).

Letter Highlights Conflict Concerns Tied to DOGE Oversight

In a letter sent Tuesday to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting NASA Administrator Janet Petro, House Democrats expressed concern over Musk’s leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an entity driving significant structural changes across federal agencies.

The letter, signed by ranking Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, warned of an “inherent conflict of interest.”

“Mr Musk’s dual role creates an inherent conflict of interest between SpaceX’s status as a large government contractor and DOGE’s influence at agencies overseeing SpaceX contracts, contract bids, and regulations governing the company,” the lawmakers wrote.

DOGE’s Federal Reforms and SpaceX’s Federal Ties

DOGE is currently spearheading reforms that include dismissing probationary Defence employees, cancelling hundreds of millions of dollars in NASA grants, and eliminating entire programmes at both NASA and the DoD.

At the same time, SpaceX continues to be a major contractor for both agencies. The company has won multiple high-value contracts even after Musk began serving in the Trump administration’s DOGE unit.

Lawmakers cautioned that even the appearance of a conflict of interest is troubling. “Because SpaceX performs significant work for the federal government across the national security and civil space architectures, even the perception of a conflict is very troubling,” the letter stated.

    Musk’s Expanding Influence Under Scrutiny

Elon Musk, who founded SpaceX in 2002, has led the company to become one of the most influential players in global space exploration. Its deep partnerships with NASA and the DoD position it at the centre of US space and defence strategy.

However, Musk’s parallel role in overseeing federal efficiency efforts is raising eyebrows. Lawmakers argue that this unique arrangement could give SpaceX undue influence over agencies responsible for awarding contracts and shaping regulations.

The letter calls for greater transparency and potentially stricter safeguards to avoid any actual or perceived misuse of influence.
