ISRO to Launch EOS-09 in Milestone 101st Mission

India’s space programme is set to achieve a major milestone with the launch of its 101st mission. On 18 May 2025 at 05:59 AM IST, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch the EOS-09 satellite aboard the PSLV-C61 rocket from the First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR.

The mission will deploy the Earth Observation Satellite into a Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit (SSPO), further strengthening India’s remote sensing capabilities.

    PSLV-C61: A Proven Workhorse

The PSLV-C61 mission marks the 63rd flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and the 27th using the XL configuration. Known for its consistency and reliability, the PSLV has supported diverse payloads and orbital requirements over the years.

Standing at 44.5 metres and weighing 321 tonnes at lift-off, the rocket features a four-stage design, including six solid strap-on boosters. Once the satellite is deployed, Orbit Change Thrusters (OCT) will lower the altitude of the PS4 stage. It will then be passivated, reducing its orbital lifespan and contributing to sustainable space operations.

    EOS-09: Enhancing Earth Observation

The EOS-09 satellite has been built to deliver uninterrupted and reliable remote sensing data for a variety of operational applications. It carries a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload and has a launch mass of 1,696.24 kilograms.

With a planned mission life of five years, EOS-09 is equipped with deorbiting fuel. This allows for safe disposal at the end of its operational phase, aligning with modern sustainability standards in space.

This mission is another step forward in India’s commitment to responsible space exploration and the practical application of satellite technology for national development.
