Telefonica Emergency Services Restored After Early Morning Disruptions
Spanish telecom giant Telefonica reported a communications outage on Tuesday, 21 May, affecting fixed-line phone and internet services in several regions across Spain. The company attributed the issue to scheduled work aimed at updating its network infrastructure.
In a short statement, Telefonica said its teams were actively working to restore all affected services. It confirmed that 112 emergency lines, which were briefly impacted, are now functioning again in the affected areas.
The outage was reported in the early hours of the morning and affected several key regions. These include Aragon, Valencia, Andalusia, Extremadura, the Basque Country, and Navarra, according to the Downdetector monitoring platform.
Mobile Services Unaffected; Other Providers Stable
Despite the disruption, Telefonica’s mobile network remained operational. Other major telecom providers in Spain, including Orange’s MasOrange, reported no issues with their services during the incident.
Telefonica is the second-largest telecom operator in Spain and plays a vital role in the country’s digital infrastructure. The timing of the disruption drew further attention, coming just three weeks after a major power blackout impacted large parts of Spain and Portugal on 28 April. The cause of that incident is still under investigation.
Network Upgrade Work Continues
The company has not yet provided a timeline for full restoration but assured customers that the work is progressing. Network updates are part of Telefonica’s broader efforts to improve service reliability and speed across Spain.
While disruptions during maintenance are sometimes unavoidable, the company aims to reduce future incidents through ongoing infrastructure enhancements.
