SpaceX Starbase Residents Voice Concerns Over City’s First Meeting

SpaceX Starbase Holds First Public Meeting Amid Concerns from Residents

The newly incorporated city of Starbase, located in South Texas and established by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, held a public meeting on Monday, 23 June. This was one of the city’s first steps in shaping its local governance. Key topics included proposed zoning changes and details of Starbase’s early budget planning.

    Concerns Raised by Longtime Locals

Several residents voiced concerns about the way the city is being managed. Jesus Abete, a 65-year-old retired teacher from nearby Brownsville, shared his worries. His mother owns property in Starbase, and he feels the current city leadership does not represent long-standing members of the community.

“I feel like a Native American that they’re taking our rights,” said Abete. “I’d like to have someone who has lived here represent us.”

Abete also criticised the meeting’s timing. It was held on a Monday morning, a time when many residents are at work and unable to attend.

    Complaints About Limited Public Input

Another local, William Bruns, who owns property in Starbase, said he was unhappy with a letter he received before the meeting. The letter mentioned restrictions on public speaking times.

“It talks about how the mayor might limit you to one or two minutes, depending on the number of speakers,” Bruns explained. “That doesn’t feel very open to public opinion. I think that’s unfair.”

    Budget Plans and Revenue Projections

City administrator Kent Myers gave an overview of Starbase’s financial plans. While property and sales tax rates have not yet been finalised, Myers said the city expects to bring in around $2 million in revenue. This will mainly come from building permit development fees and tax-anticipation notes. These are municipal bonds backed by future tax income.

As the city of Starbase begins to take shape, some locals are urging for more inclusive decision-making. Many want to ensure their voices are heard as the area evolves under the guidance of SpaceX.
