A Proud Moment for India After 41 Years

On Wednesday, June 25, people across India cheered the successful launch of the Axiom 4 mission. The event was especially significant because it included Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla as part of the crew. This marked the first time in 41 years that an Indian has travelled to space.

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a pilot in the Indian Air Force, played a key role in the mission. His participation is seen as a stepping stone for India’s own space ambitions, particularly the upcoming Gaganyaan mission. That mission, set for 2027, will be India’s first home-grown crewed spacecraft journey.

Family of Shubhanshu Shukla, Leaders React to the Launch

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s family shared their joy and pride with the media. His mother, Asha, said she became emotional while watching the launch. His wife, Kamna Shukla, said she felt proud of her husband and his achievement.

Indian politicians also expressed excitement. The minister of science and technology, Jitendra Singh, said the launch shows that India is “no longer a follower” in space partnerships, especially those involving companies like SpaceX.

Minister of science and technology, Jitendra Singh, also praised Shukla’s importance in the mission. He highlighted that, besides being a pilot, Shukla would carry out seven key experiments during the mission.

A Global Mission with Indian Involvement

The Axiom 4 mission lifted off from National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The launch took place at around 2:30 a.m. EDT (0630 GMT). Axiom Space, a Texas-based company, organised the mission in partnership with Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX.

This launch reflects growing international collaboration in space missions and India’s increasing role in the global space community. It also gives momentum to India’s future projects in human spaceflight.
