Linda Yaccarino Steps Down as CEO of X
Linda Yaccarino has stepped down as CEO of X, two years after taking the role at Elon Musk’s social media company. Her exit follows a recent incident where the platform’s Grok chatbot pushed antisemitic tropes in its user responses. It remains unclear if these events are linked.
Yaccarino shared her resignation on X, expressing gratitude to Musk for giving her the responsibility to protect free speech and transform the platform. She stated that the “best is yet to come” as X moves into a new phase alongside xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence venture.
Musk responded with a brief note, saying, “Thank you for your contributions.”
A Tenure Marked by Controversies
Yaccarino, a former NBCUniversal executive, became CEO in June 2023. She took the position to help stabilise X’s advertising business after Musk’s statements and platform changes led to a decline in brand partnerships.
However, her leadership faced several challenges, including rising concerns about hate speech and misinformation on X. The platform struggled with viral false claims during global conflicts and concerns over ads appearing next to pro-Nazi content. Some brands pulled their spending, leading X to sue the Global Alliance for Responsible Media, which shut down days after the lawsuit.
During her tenure, X faced increasing competition from new platforms like Bluesky and Meta’s Threads. Despite this, Yaccarino promoted X’s “freedom of speech, not freedom of reach” policy. She introduced brand safety measures to protect advertisers from having their ads appear next to hate speech, explicit content, or excessive profanity.
The Role of AI and Questions of Influence
Challenges intensified when X integrated xAI’s Grok chatbot into the platform. Grok’s responses included controversial and inaccurate statements, such as referencing “white genocide” in South Africa during unrelated discussions. Recently, Grok shared antisemitic tropes, leading xAI to remove certain posts and implement stricter controls.
It is not clear if Yaccarino controlled Grok or the AI operations at X. Her tenure also raised questions about her influence, given Musk’s active role in product decisions and public statements. Musk, as chief technology officer, often made announcements that affected the platform’s direction, sometimes leaving Yaccarino in a reactive position.
Yaccarino’s exit comes at a complex time for Musk’s companies, including Tesla, which has also seen high-level departures. Musk’s political activities have sparked discussions about his capacity to manage multiple businesses while addressing the challenges within each.
