Brazil to Send Social Media Regulation Proposal to Congress, Lula Confirms

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday that a proposal to regulate social media platforms is ready and will soon be sent to Congress.

Speaking to BandNews, Lula confirmed that the final draft would be on his desk by Wednesday afternoon, allowing the government to forward it for legislative review.

Tensions with the US Over Trade

The announcement comes amid trade tensions with the United States. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports. He linked the move to what he called a “witch hunt” against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and to alleged “unfair trade practices,” particularly concerning US companies’ digital trade.

Despite this, Lula said he hopes to meet Trump one day and engage in a civil discussion as two heads of state.

    Invitation to COP30 Climate Summit

Lula also revealed that he has sent Trump an invitation to attend COP30, the global climate summit set to take place in Brazil later this year. The event is expected to bring together world leaders to discuss environmental and climate action.

Talks with European Leaders on Trade Deal

Looking ahead, Lula said he plans to call leaders from France, Germany, and the European Union next week. The discussions will focus on the ongoing negotiations between the EU and South America’s Mercosur trade bloc. The agreement has been under debate for years, with both sides seeking to finalise terms on market access and environmental commitments.
