Nevada Government Services Disrupted by Mysterious Network Security Incident

State Websites and Phone Lines Hit by Widespread Outage

Government operations in the US state of Nevada faced major disruptions on Monday due to a network security incident. Several state offices were forced to close, while numerous websites and phone lines went offline or became unreliable.

Governor Joe Lombardo’s office posted a message on X (formerly Twitter), confirming the incident. The message warned that “some state websites or phone lines may be slow or briefly unavailable during recovery.” It did not detail the cause of the problem.

Attempts to access the governor’s website and other Nevada state portals late Monday were unsuccessful. The exact nature of the network disruption remains undisclosed, but the symptoms align with those seen in ransomware attacks. Such attacks typically lock out users from critical systems, causing widespread operational halts.

Federal agencies respond as state recovers

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) acknowledged the incident and confirmed it is working closely with Nevada authorities. In a public statement, CISA said it was “actively tracking this network security incident” and “collaborating with the State of Nevada to offer our assistance.”

The FBI has not yet provided a statement or responded to inquiries as of Monday evening.

Although the source and scope of the breach remain unknown, incidents of this kind have become more common across US public institutions. Ransomware groups often target local governments, aiming to extract payments in exchange for restoring access to locked systems.

Recovery efforts are ongoing, and residents may continue to experience service delays as technical teams work to restore full functionality.

Impact on public access and state operations

The outage affects a broad range of services, from accessing public records to contacting government departments. While there is no confirmation yet of data theft or long-term damage, the disruption highlights the vulnerability of digital infrastructure in public administration.

Officials have not said when full service will resume but have asked for patience from the public as recovery progresses. Updates will likely be shared via social media and any available communication channels not affected by the outage.
