TikTok Hits 200 Million Monthly Users in Europe Amid Regulatory Scrutiny

TikTok has surpassed 200 million monthly users across Europe, the company announced on Friday. The figure means roughly one in three people on the continent now use the short video platform each month, underscoring its growing popularity, especially among teenagers.

    Rapid Growth Across the Region

The latest milestone represents a sharp rise from 175 million users in 2024, covering audiences across 32 European countries. Globally, TikTok, owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, now has more than 1 billion monthly active users, according to a company spokesperson.

This surge highlights TikTok’s continued dominance in the short-form video market, as it captures more attention from young audiences while expanding its advertising potential in Europe.

    Ongoing Regulatory Challenges

Despite its growth, TikTok continues to face legal and political hurdles. In May, the company was fined €530 million ($600 million) by its lead EU privacy regulator over data protection issues.

Meanwhile, in the United States, President Donald Trump has been pressuring ByteDance to divest TikTok’s assets, citing national security concerns. The move reflects broader tensions over Chinese-owned technology firms operating in Western markets.

ByteDance Valued at Over $330 Billion

Parent company ByteDance is also preparing for an employee share buyback programme, which would value the firm at more than $330 billion, Reuters reported in August. The valuation reflects investor confidence in TikTok’s global reach and revenue growth, despite mounting regulatory scrutiny.

TikTok’s ability to balance expansion with compliance will be key as it cements its role as one of the most influential social media platforms worldwide.
