Milrem Robotics and Dutch Drone Makers Set Up Production Hub in the Netherlands
Estonian defence company Milrem Robotics has joined forces with Dutch drone manufacturers to use space at a factory owned by industrial group VDL, the Netherlands Defence Ministry announced on Monday. The move marks a significant step in strengthening European defence manufacturing and cooperation.
New Defence Production Site in Born
The new facility, located in Born, will host hundreds of workers, according to a ministry spokesperson. The site will be used to fulfil orders for both the Dutch and Ukrainian militaries, signalling a growing demand for advanced unmanned systems. The site was previously used by VDL to produce cars for BMW until March 2024.
Milrem Robotics, known for its unmanned ground vehicles, will operate alongside Dutch firms DeltaQuad and Tulip Tech. DeltaQuad, a key supplier to the Dutch Air Force, specialises in advanced drone systems. Tulip Tech focuses on technologies that boost battery efficiency and extend drone range, helping enhance the endurance and performance of military drones.
Sensitive Details and Future Plans
A ministry spokesperson noted that details on production volumes and specific equipment types remain confidential due to both security and commercial reasons. However, they confirmed that several other companies are also exploring the possibility of using the site for military manufacturing.
A VDL spokesperson stated that although parts of the factory are now being repurposed for defence production, significant space remains available for future projects. VDL, best known as a major supplier to chipmaker ASML, continues to diversify its industrial activities as it adapts to new market needs.
This collaboration reflects a broader trend in Europe toward strengthening domestic defence manufacturing and innovation, particularly as the region supports Ukraine’s military efforts and invests in its own security capabilities.
