Protesters in Tomsk Rally Against Russia’s Roblox Ban

    Russia Bans Roblox

Protesters in Siberia Oppose Russia’s Ban on Roblox

Several dozen people gathered in the Siberian city of Tomsk on Sunday to protest against Russia’s decision to ban the U.S.-based gaming platform Roblox, marking a rare public display of dissent amid tightening censorship laws. The protest reflected growing frustration over Moscow’s escalating restrictions on digital platforms.

    Public Outcry Over Digital Restrictions

In the snow-covered Vladimir Vysotsky Park, about 25 people held up hand-drawn placards reading “Hands off Roblox” and “Roblox is the victim of the digital Iron Curtain,” according to photos shared by one of the organisers. Another sign read, “Bans and blocks are all you are able to do.” Despite the freezing temperatures, demonstrators gathered in a small circle, calling for an end to what they described as excessive digital control.

Russia’s communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, announced on 3 December that it had blocked Roblox for containing “inappropriate content that can negatively impact the spiritual and moral development of children.” The move adds Roblox to a growing list of platforms restricted or blocked in Russia, including Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and YouTube.

Debate Over Censorship and Child Safety

The ban has reignited debate across Russia about online censorship, child safety and digital freedom. Many young Russians have questioned the rationale behind blocking platforms that can easily be accessed through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Others have expressed frustration over the lack of homegrown alternatives to Western social media and gaming platforms.

Some parents and teachers, however, have supported the decision, saying Roblox exposes children to inappropriate material and the risk of interacting with adults online. Roblox, headquartered in San Mateo, California, has faced similar bans in Iraq and Turkey over concerns about child safety.

    Officials Defend Information Controls

Russian officials maintain that online restrictions are necessary to counter what they call an “information war” waged by Western powers. They argue that the bans protect national interests and shield citizens from what they view as the spread of “decadent” Western cultural influences that threaten traditional Russian values.

Roblox has said it maintains “a deep commitment to safety” and employs “rigorous built-in protections” to safeguard users. The company has not yet commented on the Russian ban.
