Musk’s xAI to Invest $20 Billion in Mississippi AI Data Centre

Musk’s xAI to Pour Over $20 Billion into Mississippi Data Centre

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI plans to invest more than $20 billion in building a large-scale data centre in Southaven, Mississippi, state Governor Tate Reeves announced on Thursday. The facility, named “MACROHARDRR,” marks one of the biggest single private technology investments in the region’s history, reflecting surging global demand for computing power driven by the generative AI boom.

Massive Investment to Boost AI Compute Power

According to the governor’s statement, construction is already under way, with operations scheduled to begin in February 2026. The centre is expected to significantly expand xAI’s infrastructure capacity and strengthen its ability to train large-scale AI models to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.

Musk had previously revealed details of the project on 30 December, saying the new site would lift xAI’s total compute power to 2 gigawatts, but he did not specify the location or total investment at that time.

The Southaven facility is strategically located near xAI’s recently acquired power plant site and its existing data centre in Memphis, Tennessee, which hosts “Colossus” — the company’s flagship supercomputer cluster, described as the largest in the world.

    xAI’s Expanding AI Infrastructure Footprint

The announcement underscores Musk’s growing ambition to position xAI as a top-tier competitor in the fast-moving generative AI sector. The company, founded in 2023, aims to accelerate research into artificial general intelligence and has already integrated its models into Musk’s social platform X (formerly Twitter) and Tesla’s autonomous driving systems.

xAI’s heavy spending aligns with broader industry trends, as tech giants and AI-focused firms invest heavily in advanced data infrastructure to support the next generation of large language models. A Bloomberg report earlier on Thursday said xAI spent $7.8 billion in cash during the first nine months of the year, reflecting the immense capital requirements typical of leading AI startups.

    Strategic Significance for Mississippi

Governor Reeves hailed the investment as a major milestone for Mississippi’s technology sector, promising job creation and economic revitalisation for the region. “This project firmly places Mississippi on the map as a destination for cutting-edge innovation,” Reeves said in a statement.

As AI competition intensifies globally, xAI’s Mississippi data centre signals Musk’s determination to build an infrastructure network capable of sustaining large-scale AI development at an unprecedented pace.
