Indonesia Blocks Elon Musk’s Grok Chatbot Over Pornography Concerns

Indonesia has temporarily blocked Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot after authorities raised concerns about the risk of artificial intelligence generating pornographic content. The decision makes Indonesia the first country to restrict access to the AI tool.

Authorities Cite Human Rights and Online Safety

The move followed growing global scrutiny of AI-generated sexualised content. Governments and regulators from Europe to Asia have expressed alarm, with some launching investigations into the issue.

xAI, the company behind Grok, announced on Thursday that it would limit image generation and editing features to paying users. The decision came after reports that users were able to create inappropriate and sexualised images, including depictions of scantily clad children.

Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid said in a statement that Indonesia viewed the creation of non-consensual sexual deepfakes as a “serious violation of human rights, dignity, and the security of citizens in the digital space.” She added that the ministry had summoned representatives from X, the platform hosting Grok, to discuss the issue further.

xAI Responds as Musk Warns Against Misuse

Elon Musk addressed the controversy on X, warning that anyone using Grok to generate illegal material would face the same consequences as those who uploaded such content directly. His comments echoed xAI’s stance on enforcing stricter content controls while addressing system vulnerabilities.

When contacted by Reuters for comment, xAI replied with what appeared to be an automated message stating, “Legacy Media Lies.” X, meanwhile, did not immediately respond to requests for clarification.

    Indonesia’s Strict Online Regulations

Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, enforces some of the toughest online regulations in the region. The country strictly bans the distribution of obscene material and has previously blocked websites and platforms that violate its decency laws.

The temporary suspension of Grok underscores the government’s commitment to protecting digital ethics and maintaining social norms in its rapidly expanding online ecosystem.
