CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative Strengthens India’s Scientific Workforce

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has been driving a major national effort to boost skill development through its Integrated Skill Initiative, a flagship programme aligned with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Skill India missions. The initiative aims to close the gap between scientific research and industry needs by providing hands-on, industry-oriented training to a wide spectrum of learners across the country.

    Bridging Science, Industry, and Skills

As India’s premier R&D organisation, CSIR leverages its extensive network of laboratories, cutting-edge research infrastructure, and scientific expertise to integrate technical education with practical skills. The programme is designed to serve diverse beneficiaries, including students, young researchers, technical staff, working professionals, ITI diploma holders, farmers, and rural communities.

The initiative’s primary focus is to connect scientific knowledge with real-world industrial, societal, and entrepreneurial needs. Through both short-term and long-term training modules, internships, certification courses, and laboratory-based sessions, participants gain exposure to evolving technologies that drive industry growth.

    Expanding Across Key Sectors

The CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative covers 18 of the 36 priority sectors identified under the National Skill Development Mission (NSDM). These sectors include aerospace and aviation, agriculture, automotive, construction, electronics, green jobs, healthcare, life sciences, textiles, and IT and ITeS, among others. The curriculum ensures that participants acquire not only theoretical understanding but also hands-on experience essential for employability and entrepreneurship.

Since its inception, the initiative has trained more than 1.9 lakh individuals through over 5,200 skill-based programmes, with targeted efforts to reach women and rural citizens during its first two phases.

    Advancing Through the Third Phase

Launched in June 2025 by Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of CSIR and Secretary of DSIR, the third phase of the programme focuses on advanced skilling, strengthening academia-industry linkages, and fostering innovation-driven growth. Within its first year, the phase trained more than 14,000 participants through 425 training sessions conducted across 37 CSIR laboratories nationwide.

The CSIR-Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) in Ghaziabad serves as the nodal agency for the initiative, overseeing coordination, performance monitoring, and evaluation. With its strong emphasis on quality and impact, the programme continues to play a crucial role in building a technically skilled, self-reliant, and future-ready India.
