DeepSeek V4 Launch Boosts China AI Ambitions

    DeepSeek V4 Update

DeepSeek V4 Launch Signals Shift in China’s AI Landscape

DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence startup known for its low-cost models, has released a preview of its much-anticipated V4 model. The company adapted this latest system for Huawei chip technology, highlighting China’s advancing capabilities in the sector. This move marks a notable shift, as DeepSeek previously relied on Nvidia chips for its development work.

However, the company has not disclosed which processors it used to train the V4 model. Despite this, it emphasised strong performance results. The pro version of the model surpasses other open-source systems in global knowledge benchmarks. It trails only a leading closed-source competitor in this category.

In addition, DeepSeek introduced a lower-cost flash version alongside the pro model. Preview releases allow the company to gather real-world feedback and refine the system before its final launch. Nevertheless, DeepSeek has not specified when it plans to release the completed version.

DeepSeek V4 Amid Rising US-China AI Tensions

The preview launch arrives during heightened tensions between the United States and China over artificial intelligence. Recently, the White House accused China of systematically acquiring intellectual property from US AI laboratories. This development could complicate diplomatic relations ahead of an upcoming summit between the two nations.

DeepSeek has become central to these disputes. US officials have alleged that the company breached export controls by obtaining advanced Nvidia chips. Furthermore, competing firms have claimed that DeepSeek improperly distilled proprietary models.

In response, DeepSeek acknowledged its use of Nvidia hardware but did not clarify whether those chips fell under export restrictions. The company stated that its earlier V3 model relied on naturally sourced data collected through web crawling. It also maintained that it did not intentionally use synthetic data generated by external systems.

Meanwhile, Chinese officials rejected the allegations. They stressed their commitment to protecting intellectual property rights and dismissed the claims as unfounded.

Huawei Partnership Strengthens DeepSeek V4 Strategy

DeepSeek’s collaboration with Huawei represents a strategic development. Huawei confirmed that it worked closely with the startup to ensure compatibility across its full range of high-performance systems. As a result, the entire Ascend supernode product line now supports the V4 series.

This partnership aligns with China’s broader push for technological self-sufficiency. Since 2022, US restrictions on advanced AI chips have encouraged domestic innovation. Consequently, companies like Huawei have expanded their role in the semiconductor ecosystem.

At the same time, DeepSeek’s rapid growth has reshaped the competitive landscape. Its success has accelerated the adoption of affordable, open-source AI models across China. While this has energised the sector, it has also intensified competition. Following the V4 preview release, several rival firms saw their share prices decline.

DeepSeek continues to attract investor interest as well. Reports suggest that the company is seeking funding at a valuation exceeding $20 billion. Discussions with major technology firms regarding potential investments are reportedly ongoing.
