Elon Musk Faces Mixed Reception In China Amid Beijing Summit
Elon Musk has long attracted admiration and criticism in China. While many view him as a visionary entrepreneur, regulators and consumers have also challenged his companies over customer complaints and growing market pressure.
The Tesla chief has received praise for helping accelerate the electric vehicle industry in China. However, Chinese regulators and sections of the public have criticised the company for its handling of customer concerns. At the same time, the influence of SpaceX and its Starlink satellite network has drawn scrutiny from the People’s Liberation Army.
Musk Joins US Business Delegation
Meanwhile, Musk is part of a group of more than a dozen chief executives and senior business leaders accompanying Donald Trump to Beijing for talks with Xi Jinping. The delegation also includes Tim Cook of Apple and Jensen Huang of Nvidia.
Many of the executives attending the summit are seeking to improve relations and resolve business challenges with Beijing. Consequently, Musk remains one of the most closely watched American business figures operating in China.
Tesla Faces Rising Competition
Although Tesla continues to hold influence in the Chinese market, the company faces mounting competition from domestic electric vehicle manufacturers. Chinese rivals have steadily narrowed the gap in both pricing and technology, increasing pressure on Tesla’s position in the world’s largest EV market.
As competition intensifies, Musk risks losing some of the prestige and influence he once enjoyed in China. Even so, his companies continue to play an important role in sectors that align with Beijing’s broader technological ambitions.
Musk Seeks Closer Cooperation
Speaking to reporters while leaving the Great Hall of the People on Thursday, Musk said he hopes to achieve “many good things” in China. His comments reflected the continuing importance of the Chinese market to both Tesla and his broader business interests.
According to Kyle Chan, a fellow specialising in Chinese technology at the Brookings Institution, Musk’s business priorities still overlap with key objectives pursued by Beijing. That alignment has helped maintain his standing in China despite recent tensions and growing market competition.
