China’s F406 Turbofan Engine Completes Maiden Flight Test

China’s domestically developed F406 turbofan engine has completed its maiden flight test in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The engine, which delivers 600 kg of thrust, marks a new step in the country’s medium and small-thrust aviation engine development.

According to the Aero Engine Corporation of China, the test flight took place on Saturday using an advanced meteorological drone in a twin-engine configuration.

    F406 Engine Undergoes First Flight

Video footage released by CNS showed the F406 engine taking off from a runway during the test operation. Additional file footage displayed the engine during earlier exhibition and development stages.

The F406 was developed by a technology subsidiary under the Aero Engine Corporation of China. According to the company, the programme addresses several technical gaps in China’s domestically produced medium and small-thrust turbofan engine sector.

Engine Designed for Multiple Drone Platforms

The company stated that the F406 engine is intended for use across several unmanned mission platforms. These include high-altitude inspection drones, relay communication drones, and long-endurance high-altitude unmanned aircraft.

Moreover, the successful maiden flight test demonstrates the engine’s potential application in specialised aerial operations that require sustained endurance and reliable propulsion at high altitudes.

CNS Releases Footage of Flight Test

The video news package was provided by CNS (China News Service), which described the F406 as part of China’s broader effort to strengthen domestic aerospace technology capabilities.

CNS said the footage is available for licensing and includes visuals of the engine taking off as well as archival display footage.
