AI Transforms China’s Gaming Industry by Boosting Creativity and Development

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a powerful driving force behind China’s gaming industry, lowering development barriers, accelerating production, and enabling more people to turn creative ideas into playable games. As AI tools continue to evolve, they are reshaping every stage of game development, from concept creation to player interaction, while opening new opportunities for developers from diverse backgrounds.

At ChinaJoy, China’s largest annual gaming expo, which concluded on Monday, visitors experienced the latest AI-powered innovations. From AI-driven game development workflows to lifelike humanoid robots, the exhibition showcased how rapidly AI is changing the gaming landscape.

“The character is incredibly lively. It feels just like a real person talking,” said one game enthusiast, highlighting the natural quality of AI-powered interactions.

AI Lowers the Barrier for Game Development

Industry experts noted that AI has become an integral part of the game development process. By describing ideas in everyday language, creators can now use AI systems to generate code, making game development more accessible to newcomers and independent creators.

Xiao Hana, a project team member at MEOWNTAIN, said this year marks her tenth year in game development, although she only began using AI tools last year.

She revealed that the first batch of games created using AI platforms has already entered the Chinese market. According to Xiao, the latest project introduced AI agents that allow players to engage in free-flowing conversations with in-game characters. To achieve this, each character was trained using datasets containing approximately 100,000 words, creating more realistic and engaging interactions.

AI Improves Gameplay and Accelerates Production

One recently released role-playing game was developed using AI agents created by Chinese technology company Tencent. Thanks to advances in generative AI, conversations between players and game characters have become significantly more natural and responsive.

Zhang Jian, General Manager of the Ecosystem Development Department at Tencent Games, said AI enables developers to validate ideas much earlier in the development cycle. As a result, the cost of experimentation has fallen considerably.

However, he emphasised that lowering technical barriers does not eliminate challenges. Instead, success increasingly depends on the originality and quality of ideas. He added that creativity and sound judgement will become even more valuable as AI takes over routine development tasks, allowing developers to focus on innovation.

Chinese Games Expand Their Global Reach

AI is also helping developers produce and update games more efficiently while reducing production costs. At the same time, Chinese game studios continue to strengthen their international presence. During the first half of this year, self-developed Chinese games generated more than 12 billion U.S. dollars in overseas revenue, representing an increase of more than 30 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Gaming Serves as a Testing Ground for AI

Beyond entertainment, games are becoming an important testing environment for general-purpose AI systems. Their complexity provides developers with an opportunity to evaluate whether AI agents capable of handling demanding game development tasks can also perform effectively in broader workplace applications.

Deng Zhidong, Product Operation Specialist for WorkBuddy, Tencent’s full-scenario AI workbench, said games represent one of the most integrated and complex internet applications. He explained that if AI performs well in such a challenging environment, it is likely to perform even better in everyday work and other general-purpose tasks.

Tencent is also encouraging wider participation in AI-powered game development. This year, the company is hosting its first game development competition for university students.

According to Deng, many participating teams come from non-traditional backgrounds rather than computer science or art. Students studying civil engineering, landscape design and other disciplines are contributing unique professional perspectives, demonstrating how AI is broadening access to game creation.

As AI continues to evolve, it is transforming both the player experience and the development process. From creating more responsive characters to helping first-time developers build games more easily, AI is changing who can develop games and how quickly innovative ideas can become interactive experiences.
