India has made significant progress in its green transition: solar power capacity has surged and electric mobility is beginning to scale. The obvious question though is whether India can turn these achievements into a new model of economic development?
Mahua Acharya, leader in climate finance and climate change and the founder and CEO of INTENT Platform, believes that this is doable. But, India must get the business model right, make green alternatives affordable, and build the scale needed to make them commercially viable.
Drawing on her experience leading India’s national electric-bus programme, Mahua explains how government-created demand can help new industries take off, why the green transition need not mean fewer jobs, and how reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels strengthens India’s energy security.
At the same time, Mahua believes that India’s rising electricity demand, inadequate storage and grid constraints mean coal will remain essential until reliable, affordable green power can be delivered at scale.
