EdgeRunner’s AI Battle Buddy: Revolutionising Military Support

With global conflicts on the rise, the US and its allies must lead in generative AI. EdgeRunner, a US-based startup, is collaborating closely with defence sector partners to deliver cutting-edge AI capabilities to the US military. EdgeRunner has unveiled its latest innovation, the AI Battle Buddy—an offline AI platform designed to revolutionise military support.

    Introducing AI Battle Buddy

This advanced system integrates seamlessly with any device, including laptops and smartphones. It operates effectively in fully air-gapped environments, bridging critical knowledge gaps between non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and Officers across all experience levels.

Leveraging the advanced EdgeRunner Tactical model, the AI Battle Buddy operates with 7 billion parameters, offering performance comparable to Meta’s Llama 3-70B model but with significantly lower resource requirements. It can encapsulate over 20 years of military wisdom into a single, interactive assistant, envisioned as an “NCO in a bottle.” This powerful tool transforms legacy unstructured military data into an intelligent knowledge base while keeping sensitive information secure without cloud transfer.

    Fully Secure, Customisable, and Offline

The AI Battle Buddy ensures operational security by operating offline, protecting sensitive data from cyber threats. It features local data integration for precise, role-specific guidance based on current military practices. The system is customisable for various military roles, such as infantry or engineering, and includes built-in Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) capabilities for real-time, context-aware recommendations.

The AI Battle Buddy also integrates advanced features such as motion tracking and multi-language translation, facilitating comprehensive support in diverse operational settings. Its adaptability to the unique cultures, terminologies, and training methods of different military branches ensures highly relevant support.

    Recognition and Performance

The US Space Force Space Systems Command (SSC) has recently praised the AI Battle Buddy. During a showcase at Stanford University, the system demonstrated its capabilities by ingesting 10,000 PDFs—equivalent to around 300 million tokens—and outperformed other models, including GPT-4o-mini, in delivering accurate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for ground station satellite scheduling.

This technology is set to transform how Warfighters and Operators receive support, offering enhanced decision-making, increased operational security, tailored support, efficient training, and improved situational awareness through real-time insights into movement and positioning. The AI Battle Buddy also overcomes language barriers with its advanced translation capabilities.

The Future of Military Training and Support

The AI Battle Buddy minimises reliance on traditional training methods like “death by PowerPoint” presentations, streamlining Warfighter training and accelerating readiness. It is an advanced educational tool that provides real-time support during preparation and active missions, making it an invaluable asset to the military.

“We are incredibly proud of the EdgeRunner Battle Buddy’s ability to operate independently in secure environments while offering the kind of tailored, real-time support that military personnel need in the field,” said Tyler Xuan Saltsman, Co-Founder and CEO of EdgeRunner AI.

The AI Battle Buddy represents a significant leap forward in military support technology, ensuring the US military remains at the forefront of innovation in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
