Worldcoin Rebrands to World Network, Expands Iris-Scanning Technology

Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, announced on Thursday that it is rebranding to World Network and ramping up efforts to scan every human’s iris using its signature “orb” devices. The core offering of the project is World ID, a “digital passport” designed to verify that its holder is a real human, distinguishing them from AI bots in the digital world.

New Orb Device Unveiled with Enhanced Security

At an event in San Francisco, World Network introduced an updated version of its orb iris-scanning device. The new orb now features 5G connectivity and improved privacy and security measures to address ongoing concerns about data collection. In addition to the new orb, the company unveiled initiatives to increase access, such as purpose-built retail locations and a partnership with Latin American delivery service Rappi to bring orbs directly to people in certain areas.

The orb, roughly the size of a bowling ball, performs in-person iris scans to create a World ID. This World ID serves as a unique identifier, verifying that a person is human and allowing them to interact more securely in the digital space. As a bonus, users in certain countries receive WLD cryptocurrency tokens when they sign up for a World ID.

    Rapid Growth Amid Privacy Concerns

Since its launch in July 2023, over 6.9 million people have signed up for iris scans, according to World Network. However, the project has faced backlash from privacy advocates who are concerned about how personal data is collected, stored, and used. Authorities in Spain and Portugal have issued temporary bans on the project, while Argentina and Britain have also announced plans to investigate its practices.

World Network, operated by Tools for Humanity based in San Francisco and Erlangen, Germany, continues to expand its reach while addressing regulatory challenges and privacy concerns.
