    SpainSat NG-I

Spain’s Most Advanced Satellite SpainSat NG-I Prepares for Launch from the US

The SpainSat NG-I, one of Europe’s most advanced military telecommunication satellites, has arrived at Cape Canaveral, US. Transported aboard an Antonov cargo aircraft from Airbus Defence and Space’s facilities in Toulouse, France, the satellite is scheduled to launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on the night of 28th January (early 29th January in Europe). This launch marks a significant step forward in secure communication capabilities for Spain.

Cutting-Edge Technology Delivered by Airbus Defence and Space

Airbus Defence and Space, acting as the prime contractor, has delivered the SpainSat NG-I satellite to Hisdesat, which will operate the satellite. It is expected to provide secure communication services for the Spanish Armed Forces starting in the second half of 2025. The spacecraft is built on the Eurostar Neo platform and underwent its design, integration, and testing processes in Toulouse.

    Collaborative Efforts Across Europe

The satellite payload showcases remarkable innovation, with more than 45% designed and manufactured in Spain. This includes the advanced X-band transmitting and receiving active antenna system, developed by Airbus in Spain in collaboration with Thales Alenia Space and several Spanish space companies. Additionally, Airbus in the UK contributed by designing key elements of the service module, such as the mechanical platform, propulsion system, solar array drives, and antenna mechanisms.

This international effort highlights Europe’s expertise in advanced space technology, setting new standards for military communications.
