Truveta Secures $320 Million to Build the Largest Genetic Database

Truveta, a US-based medical data research company, announced a significant investment on Monday. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Illumina, and 17 health systems have pledged a combined $320 million to support Truveta’s ambitious project to create the world’s largest genetic database.

A Billion-Dollar Valuation and Key Investments

This deal values Truveta at over $1 billion. Biotechnology giant Regeneron Pharmaceuticals will invest $120 million, while genetic sequencing leader Illumina has committed $20 million. The remaining $180 million will come from prominent US health systems, including Northwell Health in New York, Trinity Health, and Advocate Health in Chicago.

The collaboration aims to rapidly collect 10 million genomic sequences. According to Truveta CEO Terry Myerson, this initiative is set to revolutionise drug discovery and improve patient care.

    Advancing Research Through Genetic Sequencing

Genetic sequencing can identify patient predispositions for conditions like Alzheimer’s, sickle cell disease, and cancer. This knowledge can accelerate drug development and improve the targeting of existing therapies.

Regeneron will oversee genome sequencing, while Truveta will store the genetic data on its platform for analysis. The healthcare partners involved will request patient consent to analyse leftover lab specimens, linking them to anonymous medical records.

Regeneron executive Aris Baras highlighted the project’s scope:
“The scale and diversity of the Truveta Genome Project will enable us to explore the complex interplay between genetics and health in unprecedented detail.”

    A Diverse and Scalable Database

Myerson stated that Truveta’s project is expected to surpass the diversity and size of the current largest genetic databases, including the US National Institutes of Health’s All of Us Research Program, with 850,000 participants, and the UK Biobank, with 500,000 participants.

The company plans to reimburse healthcare providers when other entities purchase access to its anonymous patient data. Myerson emphasised this model as an incentive to ensure the project’s success.

    Microsoft’s Role in Cloud Storage

Microsoft, a prior investor in Truveta, will supply the cloud infrastructure for the initiative through its Azure platform.

This groundbreaking collaboration could mark a significant step forward in genetic research, enabling deeper insights into the relationship between genetics and health.
