Indian Army Contracts Odisha Startup IG Drones for Advanced Indigenous Drone Technology
In a move that underscores the rapid advancements in India’s drone technology sector, Odisha-based tech startup IG Drones has secured a contract with the Indian Army to supply advanced drone systems. The collaboration highlights the growing importance of cutting-edge, domestically developed technologies in strengthening national security while addressing the critical need to eliminate foreign, particularly Chinese, components from defence systems.
Next-Gen Drone Technology at the Forefront
The contract focuses on delivering two advanced drone platforms: VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) drones and FPV (First-Person View) drones. Both systems are designed to cater to modern military needs, offering precision, adaptability, and state-of-the-art features.
VTOL Drones: Branded as Skyhawk, these drones combine fixed-wing and rotor-based flight for unparalleled performance in challenging terrains. With a hybrid design, they offer vertical take-off and landing capabilities, making them highly effective in areas without traditional runways. The Skyhawk boasts a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 6 kg and an impressive endurance of up to one hour, ensuring operational flexibility and sustained surveillance in extreme environments like mountainous regions.
FPV Drones: Engineered for real-time intelligence gathering, FPV drones provide a first-person perspective for tactical reconnaissance. Equipped with advanced cameras, these systems enhance situational awareness, enabling personnel to gather precise intelligence from a safe distance, which is crucial for counter-infiltration and border security operations.
Both platforms integrate advanced hardware and software solutions, ensuring seamless performance in critical missions. The systems are free from Chinese components, with IG Drones sourcing key parts like cameras from trusted global suppliers while maintaining strict quality controls.
Major General RC Padhi, Senior Vice-President at IG Drones, emphasized the significance of these systems, stating, “These advanced drones will play a pivotal role in ensuring reliable surveillance, precise intelligence gathering, and enhanced border security.”
Meeting Modern Security Challenges
The demand for secure, indigenous drone solutions has grown significantly in light of recent security incidents. The hijacking of an Indian Army drone near the Pakistan border has underscored vulnerabilities associated with foreign-manufactured platforms, particularly those incorporating Chinese components. IG Drones’ systems address these concerns, offering a secure, domestically engineered alternative that aligns with India’s national security protocols.
“The decision to prioritize domestically developed drone technology reflects the Indian Army’s recognition of emerging threats and the need for robust, secure platforms,” IG Drones said in a statement.
Empowering India’s Drone Ecosystem
This partnership with the Indian Army also aligns with India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, which aim to position the country as a global leader in technology-driven innovation. Bodhisattwa Sanghapriya, Founder and CEO of IG Drones, emphasized the company’s mission:
“By blending indigenous innovation with world-class capabilities, we are setting new benchmarks in drone technology. This collaboration strengthens our commitment to empowering the armed forces while taking India’s drone ecosystem to the global stage. Our vision includes integrating 5G-enabled drone solutions to redefine the future of surveillance and security.”
India’s Growing Tech Landscape
India’s drone sector is witnessing unprecedented growth. The number of drone startups has doubled in the last three years to 398, surpassing China’s 298. Initiatives like the Drone Shakti scheme and favourable government policies have propelled this boom, encouraging innovation and investment in the sector.
IG Drones’ success showcases the potential of Indian startups to deliver sophisticated technological solutions that cater to both domestic and global markets. The company’s VTOL and FPV drones are poised to play a critical role in shaping the future of military-grade drone technology, setting the stage for further innovation in the years ahead.
