Modi and Musk in Washington: Starlink’s India Plans and Technology Talks

Modi Meets Elon Musk to Discuss Technology, Innovation, and Space Cooperation

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Thursday in Washington. Their conversation covered a range of topics, including space, mobility, technology, and innovation, Modi shared on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

    Key Areas of Cooperation Discussed

India’s foreign ministry confirmed that the meeting explored opportunities for collaboration in emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, and good governance. This meeting was part of Modi’s visit to the US, during which he is expected to engage in high-level discussions with government officials and industry leaders.

Earlier reports suggested that Starlink’s entry into India would be a major topic of discussion. SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, has been keen to launch in the Indian market but faces regulatory hurdles. A key point of contention has been how satellite spectrum should be allocated. While India’s government supports spectrum assignment without auction, Starlink’s licence application remains under review.

Impact on India’s Space and Technology Strategy

India’s decision on Starlink could significantly impact its domestic satellite internet sector. The regulatory approach taken will also influence the country’s broader space ambitions. With India’s increasing focus on commercial space activities, becoming a key player in the global space race is a national priority.

Musk’s influence in the global tech and space industries makes his interactions with world leaders significant. SpaceX’s dominance in space launches and the Starlink network have positioned Musk as a vital link between private space ventures and governments.

    Previous Agreements and Future Prospects

This meeting follows a pattern of significant decisions emerging from Modi’s US visits. In 2023, India signed the US-led Artemis Accords, a framework for space cooperation and lunar exploration, after high-level talks in Washington.

Modi is also expected to meet US President Donald Trump to discuss trade and tariff issues. Sources indicate that meetings with other business leaders are unlikely during this trip.

    Criticism from US Lawmakers

Musk’s high-profile meeting with Modi drew criticism from some US lawmakers. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy expressed concerns about Musk’s role, suggesting a conflict of interest due to his influence in the previous administration. He remarked that Musk’s talks seemed aimed at advancing his business interests rather than broader national benefits.

Former US President Donald Trump commented on the meeting, stating, “I’ll ask him whether he’s meeting as a CEO or in an official capacity,” when questioned about Musk’s role.

Despite the debate, the meeting underscores India’s deepening engagement with global technology leaders as it positions itself as a hub for innovation and space development.
