China Pavilion at Osaka Expo Blends Tradition with Innovation

The China Pavilion at the Osaka Expo in Japan has quickly become a standout attraction, drawing large crowds with its striking blend of ancient art and modern technology.

A Showcase of Heritage and Sustainability

Spanning around 3,500 square metres, the pavilion is one of the largest foreign self-built sites at the event. It is divided into three themed sections: traditional Chinese ecological wisdom, modern green development, and China’s global vision for a sustainable future.

At the centre of the pavilion is the multimedia artwork “Harmony Between Humans and Nature,” a mesmerising display that captures China’s deep cultural roots. The installation features the 24 Solar Terms — an ancient agricultural calendar developed thousands of years ago — brought to life through cutting-edge animation.

Renowned artist Chang Shana created the piece using her extensive research on the Dunhuang grotto murals. “The patterns showcased in ‘Harmony Between Humans and Nature’ are all derived from my reproductions of Dunhuang murals. Dunhuang is China’s treasure trove of art, with profound and rich cultural significance,” she explained.

    A Dynamic Visual Experience

The artwork is presented in two versions, both using high-level animation to synchronise traditional motifs with seasonal transitions. Iconic elements like flower patterns, dragons, and phoenixes shift with the seasons, creating a dynamic and immersive experience.

“Each version includes four standard colours inspired by traditional Chinese hues,” said Huang Xuanzi, founder of Changshana Studio. These colours reflect the stylistic use of light, medium, and dark tones seen across dynasties in the Dunhuang Mogao Caves.

    Glimpses from the Moon

Another standout feature is the exhibit showcasing lunar soil collected from both the near and far sides of the moon. This rare display offers visitors a unique look at the moon’s lesser-known characteristics.

Running from 13 April to 13 October 2025, Osaka Expo 2025 is a global celebration of culture and innovation. With immersive exhibits like China’s pavilion, it promises an unforgettable experience for visitors from around the world.
